What are Learning Resources

Learning Resources are the primary materials used for teaching and study within the Nimbu platform. Unlike assessments and observations, these are non-graded content types designed for consumption and interaction rather than formal evaluation. They serve as the instructional backbone of your units, ensuring students have access to the right information at the right time. By providing a diverse range of resource types from traditional PDFs to interactive SCORM packages; you can cater to different learning styles and maintain high levels of student engagement across your courses.

Understanding Learning Resources

Key characteristics:

  • Educational Purpose: Materials intended for learning and reference, not direct grading
  • Versatility: Support for multiple formats, including video, audio, and interactive web content
  • Student Interaction: Focused on viewing, reading, and self-guided exploration

Overview of Resource Types

Nimbu’s Content Library allows you to manage a wide array of digital assets to support your training strategy

Standard Content Types

These are passive learning materials that students consume at their own pace.

  • PDF: The standard for handbooks, learner guides, and static reading materials.
    • Best used for: Course handbooks, reference guides, templates, policy documents
  • Video: Host instructional videos directly to provide visual demonstrations and lectures.
    • Best used for: Demonstrations, lectures, workplace procedures, software tutorials
  • Podcast: Audio-based resources ideal for interviews, case studies, or on-the-go learning
    • Best used for: Expert interviews, case study discussions, industry insights, reflective content

Interactive & External Content

These resource types provide richer interactivity and can automatically track student completion.

  • SCORM: Upload interactive e-learning packages that track student progress and engagement.
    • Best used for: Interactive learning modules, simulations, branching scenarios
  • Canva: Embed visually rich designs and presentations directly from your Canva account.
    • Best used for: Infographics, visual presentations, branded learning materials
  • LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability): Seamlessly integrate external learning tools and platforms.
    • Best used for: Third-party learning platforms, specialised software training, external content providers
  • HTML Content: Create custom web-based pages directly within the platform for a native feel
    • Best used for: Custom learning content, procedures, quick reference guides, concept explanations

Self-Check Tools

These resources allow students to test their knowledge without formal grading.

  • Quiz: Unlike formal assessments, these quizzes are often used for self-testing and knowledge reinforcement.
    • Best used for: Knowledge checks, exam preparation, concept reinforcement, self-assessment
  • Evokio - H5P: Integrated interactive content for building rich, engaging learning experiences
    • Best used for: Interactive presentations, gamified learning, multimedia storytelling, interactive diagrams

How Students Interact with Resources

When a student accesses a Learning Resource through their portal, the focus is on comprehension and progress:

  • Accessing Content: Students can view learning materials as many times as needed throughout their enrolment. There are no attempt limits or restrictions on repeated access.
  • Self-Guided Learning: Resources are often used as foundational materials that students work through before attempting graded assessments. Content editors can set completion requirements and prerequisites to create structured learning pathways.
  • AI-Powered Learning Support: For PDF and HTML (Article) resources, students have access to the Michi AI Assistant, which provides:
    • Content Summarisation: Quick overview of key concepts
    • Flashcard Generation: Automatic creation of study flashcards for revision
    • Interactive Chat: Ask questions about the content for deeper understanding
    • Quiz Generation: Self-assessment quizzes based on the material

For more information, see: Michi Assistant for Students

  • Progress Tracking: The system monitors which resources a student has accessed and completed, providing both the student and the trainer with a clear view of study engagement and course progression.

Completion Tracking

Learning resources have two types of completion tracking:

Passive Resources (View-Only)

PDF, Video, Podcast, Canva, Article - These can be set as completion-required, displaying a "Complete" button that students click when finished.

  • Configuration: Content editors toggle "Completion Required" in the resource settings.

Active Resources (Auto-Tracking)

SCORM, LTI, Quiz, Evokio/H5P - These automatically report completion to Nimbu based on the student's interactions with the content.

Note: SCORM and LTI resources can optionally display a manual "Complete" button if automatic completion reporting is not configured in the package.

Using Completion for Prerequisites

Resources set as completion-required can be used as prerequisites in the Learning Journey feature. This allows you to:

  • Lock assessments until key resources are completed
  • Create sequential learning paths
  • Ensure students have accessed essential materials before progressing
