Adding SCORM Content

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is the industry standard for interactive e-learning packages. Unlike static PDFs or videos, a SCORM file is a "smart" package that can contain quizzes, animations, branched learning paths, and interactive simulations. Importing SCORM files into your Content Library allows your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to deliver sophisticated, engaging experiences that are consistent across all cohorts. Once uploaded, these packages become modular assets that can be mapped to any unit or used as references within assessments.

This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough for uploading and managing SCORM zip packages within Nimbu.

SCORM Tracking & Completion

Configuration Guide: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Access Learning Resources

Navigate to your primary resource repository:

  1. Sign in to your Nimbu account.
  2. From the sidebar, locate the CONTENT section.
  3. Click on Learning Resources/ Materials.

Step 2: Initialise the SCORM Upload

  1. Click the Add button in the top-right corner of the page.
  2. From the pop-up menu, select the SCORM button.

Step 3: Define Identification and Visibility

  1. Title: Enter a descriptive name for the package (e.g., SCORM Package Example).
  2. This title will identify the resource in your SCORM library and when added to units

Step 4: Uploading SCORM Zip Packages

SCORM content must be uploaded as a compressed folder to function correctly.

  • Drag your SCORM zip file into the "Add Supporting Document" box, or
  • Click Upload the file to select it from your computer

Note: Ensure your file is a valid SCORM package (typically containing an imsmanifest.xml  file).

Step 5: Configure SCORM Settings

Once the file is uploaded, configure how the SCORM package will function:

  1. Visibility: Select who can access this SCORM:
    • Trainer & Student: Both trainers and students can view this podcast (default and most common setting)
    • Trainer Only: Only trainers can access this podcast (useful for professional development content or instructor-only resources)

Show Complete Button

This setting determines how completion is reported:

When to turn toggle on "Display Complete Button":

  • Your SCORM package does not automatically report completion to the LMS
  • You want students to manually confirm they've finished the content
  • The package is informational rather than assessment-based

When to disable "Display Complete Button":

  • Your SCORM package automatically reports completion to Nimbu
  • The package includes built-in completion tracking
  • You want completion tracked based on the package's internal logic (e.g., reaching the final slide, passing an embedded quiz)

Step 6: Unzip and Preview

  1. Click the Save as Draft button in the top-right corner
  2. Wait for Processing: The system will automatically unzip and process the package. This may take a few moments depending on package size
  3. Once processing is complete, click the Preview tab to review the interactive content

Step 7: Publish

Once you have verified the package displays correctly:

  1. Click the Publish button in the top-right corner
  2. Select Yes to confirm
  3. The package will now appear in your SCORM index, ready to be mapped to units

SCORM Tracking & Completion

How SCORM Communicates with Nimbu

SCORM packages are designed to communicate with the LMS. While these materials are classified as "learning resources" (non-graded content), the system tracks:

  • Progress: Whether the student has viewed all slides or sections
  • Completion Status: When the student has finished the module (if automatically reported)
  • Internal Scores: Any quizzes built inside the SCORM package will record scores within the SCORM interface itself
  • Time Spent: Duration of student engagement with the content

Automatic vs Manual Completion

Automatic Completion:

  • The SCORM package internally determines when a student has completed it
  • Completion is reported to Nimbu without student action
  • Most reliable method if properly configured in authoring tool

Manual Completion (Complete Button):

  • Student clicks a "Complete" button after finishing
  • Useful as a backup if automatic completion isn't working
  • Gives students control over marking progress
  • What are Learning Resources?
  • Managing Content
