Student Progress Reports
Nimbu gives trainers and administrators detailed visibility into how each student is progressing through their training. The Student Progress view tracks unit completion, individual task statuses, and assessment and observation outcomes to give you everything you need to understand where a student is at, identify what is still outstanding, and take action when needed.
What's Covered in This Article
This article explains how to view and interpret student progress data in Nimbu:
- Viewing student progress in a class: The two paths for accessing a student's progress and what each one shows.
- Unit completion tracking: Understanding unit-level status badges and completion percentages.
- Assessment and observation progress: Interpreting task-level statuses for assessed content.
- Progress widget for quick overview: Using the Class Management side panel for a fast per-unit snapshot.
Who can do this: Administrators and Trainers with Class Management permissions can view student progress.
Accessing Student Progress
There are two ways to access a student's progress in Nimbu, depending on how much detail you need.
Option 1: Via the Students sidebar (full progress view):
- Select Students from the left sidebar.
- Search for and open the student's profile.
- Navigate to the Progress tab within the student's detail page.
- Select the relevant class from the class selector to view progress for that enrolment.
This path gives you the complete Learning Progress view across all units in the class, with unit-level and task-level detail.
Option 2: Via Class Management (quick unit view):
- Navigate to Classes in the left sidebar and open the relevant class.
- Go to the Class Management tab.
- Click a student's name or their unit status badge in the class grid to open the progress side panel for that student and unit.
This path opens a focused side panel showing progress for one unit at a time. It is the fastest way to check in on a specific unit without navigating away from the class.
Tip: Use the Class Management side panel for a quick status check on a specific unit. Use the full Learning Progress view via the Students sidebar for a complete picture across all of a student's units.
Viewing Student Progress in a Class
The Learning Progress view, accessed via the Students sidebar, shows the student's enrolment status and task progress across every unit in the selected class.
Class and Unit Summary
At the top of the Learning Progress view, the class name, course code, and assigned trainer are shown for context.
Each unit appears as a row in the list, displaying:
- The unit code and name.
- The student's current unit enrolment status badge.
- A count of activities To Be Marked: submissions currently waiting in the marking queue, highlighted in orange when action is required.
- A count of activities In Progress: work the student has started but not yet submitted.
Unit Enrolment Status Badges
The status badge on each unit row reflects the student's current state in that unit:
| Badge | What It Means |
|---|---|
| IA | Inactive: the unit has not yet been activated for this student. |
| IP | In Progress: the student has started working on the unit. |
| TBM | To Be Marked: at least one activity has been submitted and is awaiting trainer review. |
| AR | Awaiting Result: all required content is complete and the unit is waiting for a final result to be set. |
| C | Competent: the unit has been finalised with a Competent result. |
| NYC | Not Yet Competent: the unit has been finalised with a Not Yet Competent result. |
| N/A | Not Applicable: the unit has been excluded from this student's completion requirements. |
| Locked | The unit has been manually locked and is inaccessible to the student. |

Unit Completion Tracking
Each unit row in the Learning Progress view displays a completion percentage that reflects how much of the unit's required content the student has finished.
The percentage is based on completion-required content only: content items designated as mandatory for unit progression. Optional learning resources that are not flagged as completion required do not factor into the calculation.
A content item is counted as complete when:
- An LRM (PDF, video, article, etc.) has been marked complete by the student via the Complete button, or has had completion automatically reported (for SCORM and External Content).
- An assessment or observation has received a final result (S or NS) from the trainer.
- A quiz has been submitted and auto-marked.
The completion percentage updates in real time as students progress. A unit showing 100% completion means all completion-required content items are in a finished state, however, this does not automatically mean the unit result has been set. A unit at 100% may still be in AR (Awaiting Result) status if your RTO requires trainers to set the final result manually.
Note: A unit completion percentage of 100% reflects content completion, not competency. The final competency outcome (Competent / Not Yet Competent) is a separate determination, made by the trainer or system after all required content is finished.
Assessment and Observation Progress
Clicking the expand arrow on any unit row reveals a task-level breakdown of every content item in that unit and its current status for the student. Assessments and observations are listed separately, giving you a precise, item-by-item view of what the student has done and what remains outstanding.
Assessment Task Statuses
| Status | What It Means |
|---|---|
| IA | Inactive: the assessment has not been activated for this student. |
| AC | Active: the assessment has been activated and is available for the student. |
| IP | In Progress: the student has started the assessment but has not yet submitted. |
| TBM | To Be Marked: the student has submitted the assessment and it is awaiting trainer review. |
| S | Satisfactory: the assessment has been marked and the student met the required standard. |
| NS | Not Satisfactory: the assessment has been marked and the student did not meet the required standard. |
| Locked | Locked: the assessment is inaccessible due to a prerequisite not yet being met or an activation timing restriction. |
Each assessment row also shows an attempts indicator (e.g. Attempts: 1/2) when attempt limits are enabled, so you can see how many attempts the student has used without opening the marking view.
Observation Task Statuses
Observations follow the same status progression as assessments — from IA through to S or NS — with one additional consideration: observations may include both student questions and trainer questions. The task status reflects the overall state of the observation submission, including whether the trainer has completed their portion.
Progress Widget for Quick Overview
The Class Management side panel functions as a progress widget - a fast, focused snapshot of a student's progress for a specific unit, accessible directly from the class grid without leaving the Class Management view.
Opening the Side Panel
- Navigate to Classes and open the relevant class.
- Go to the Class Management tab.
- Click the student's name or their unit status badge in the class grid.
The side panel slides open and displays the student's name, unit name, and current unit status at the top.
Progress Tab
The Progress tab within the side panel shows a task-level summary for the selected unit, listing each content item and its current status. This gives you a quick read on what the student has completed, what is in progress, and what is yet to be started — all without navigating away from the class.
Timeline Tab
The Timeline tab within the side panel shows a chronological record of activity for this student's unit enrolment, including key events such as unit activation, submissions, and result updates.
Actions Available from the Side Panel
In addition to viewing progress, the side panel also provides direct access to enrolment management actions: Lock, Restart, and Remove, so you can take immediate action on the enrolment without switching views.
