Viewing Student Progress

Nimbu provides trainers and administrators with detailed visibility into how each student is progressing through their training. From unit-level status indicators through to individual task completion and engagement data, the progress tools available allow you to identify students who are on track, flag those who need support, and maintain a clear activity trail for compliance purposes.

What's Covered in This Article

This article explains the progress and engagement views available to trainers and administrators.

Who can do this: Trainers and Administrators with Student Management or Class Management permissions can view student progress.

Accessing Student Progress

There are two ways to access an individual student's progress in Nimbu. Both lead to the same student detail view, with Profile, Progress, Logs, and Documents tabs.

Path 1: Dashboard Widget (Quickest)

The Dashboard provides the fastest way to check an individual student's progress without navigating away from your home screen.

  1. Log in to Nimbu. Your Dashboard displays a View Your Student Progress widget.
  2. Under Student progress, select the student's name from the dropdown.
  3. Under Select class to view student progress, choose the class you want to review.
  4. The Class Details grid appears below, showing all units and their current statuses for that student.

Use the Student/ Class toggle at the top of the widget to switch between viewing progress by individual student or across the whole class at once.

Tip: The Dashboard widget is ideal for a quick check on a specific student.

Path 2: Via the Students Sidebar

Use this path when you want to look up a specific student directly, regardless of which class they are in.

  1. Click Students in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Locate and click on the student's name to open their detail view.
  3. Select the Progress tab.
  4. The view displays all classes the student is enrolled in. Click on the relevant class to see their progress within it.

Path 2: Via Class Management

Use this path when you are already working within a specific class and want to check on a particular student's progress within that class.

  1. Navigate to Classes in the left-hand sidebar and open the relevant class.
  2. Go to the Class Management tab.
  3. Click on a student's name or their unit status badge in the class grid to open a side panel for that student and unit.
  4. The side panel shows the student's name, unit name, current status, and a summary of their task-level progress for that unit, with Progress and Timeline tabs.
  5. For the full progress view across all units, click through to the student's detail page.

Tip: The Class Management side panel is ideal for a quick check on a specific unit. For a complete picture of a student's progress across all units in the class, navigate to their full detail view via the Students sidebar or by clicking through from the panel.

Learning Progress View

The Learning Progress view is accessible from the Progress tab within a student's detail page. It shows the student's status across every unit in the selected class.

Class and Unit Summary

At the top of the view, the class name, course code, and assigned trainer are displayed for context.

Each unit appears as a row showing:

  • The unit code and name.
  • The student's current unit enrolment status badge (e.g. IA, IP, TBM, AR, C, NYC).
  • A To be marked count:  the number of activities currently waiting in the marking queue for this unit, highlighted in orange when pending action is required.
  • An In progress count: the number of activities the student has started but not yet submitted.

Expanding a Unit

Click the expand arrow on any unit row to see the task-level breakdown within that unit. Content items are grouped by type:

  • Assessment: lists each assessment with its name, attempt information (e.g. Attempts: 0/2), current status badge, and a lock icon or View button.
  • Practical/ Observation: lists each observation with its name and status badge (e.g. TBM, AC, or a View button).

This gives you a precise, item-by-item view of exactly what the student has done and what is still outstanding within each unit.

Activity Status Badges in the Learning Progress View

Badge What It Means
IA Inactive: the unit or activity has not yet been activated for this student.
IP In Progress: the student has started but not yet submitted.
TBM To Be Marked: submitted and awaiting trainer review.
AC Active: the activity has been activated and is available for the student to access.
S Satisfactory: marked and met the required standard.
NS Not Satisfactory: marked and did not meet the required standard.
Locked Locked: inaccessible due to a prerequisite or activation timing restriction.

Quick Actions from Class Management Side Panel

When you open a student's unit detail from the Class Management tab, a side panel appears showing the student name, unit name, and current status, with three action buttons at the top:

  • Lock: temporarily suspends the student's access to this unit.
  • Restart: resets the student's progress for this unit entirely.
  • Remove: removes the student from this unit enrolment.

The panel also contains a Progress tab (task-level summary for this unit) and a Timeline tab (chronological log of activity for this unit).

Student Engagement View

The Student Engagement view is the second sub-view within the Progress tab, toggled from Learning Progress using the buttons at the top of the page. It provides quantitative data about how actively the student has been engaging with the platform over time.

Engagement Time Filter

A Show Engagement in dropdown in the top-right corner allows you to filter the data by time period, for example, Last 30 days. This lets you assess recent activity rather than looking at the full enrolment history.

Summary Metrics

Four headline metrics appear at the top of the view, each showing the current value and a percentage change compared to the previous equivalent period:

Metric What It Shows
Total Time Total time the student has spent in the platform (e.g. 0h 5m 48s).
Content Viewed The number of content items the student has opened.
Completed Content The number of content items the student has completed.
Time Per Content The average time spent per content item.

Engagement Progress Chart

A line chart labelled Engagement Progress plots the student's engagement level over time, with dates on the horizontal axis and engagement volume on the vertical axis. Use this chart to identify patterns, for example, a student who was active early in the class but has dropped off in recent weeks.

Content Progress Panel

To the right of the engagement chart, the Content Progress panel breaks down the student's time investment by content category, each with a trend line graph and a comparison against the previous period:

  • Learning Content: time spent on LRMs (PDFs, videos, articles, etc.).
  • Assessments: time spent on assessment activities.
  • Observations: time spent on observation activities.

Student Engagement Table

Below the charts, a Student Engagement table lists every content item the student has interacted with. The table can be filtered by content type using the All Content dropdown and searched by content name. Columns include:

Column What It Shows
Content Name The name of the content item, as a clickable link.
Unit Name The unit the content belongs to, with a course icon.
Type The content type (e.g. PDF, Assessment).
Total Time Total time the student has spent on this item.
Completed A tick with (C) if the item has been completed.
Last Viewed The date and time the student last accessed this item.

Engagement Status

In addition to the detailed engagement view per student, Nimbu assigns each student a high-level engagement status that provides a quick indicator of their overall activity level within the class. These statuses are visible from the Engagement tab in the class top navigation bar (Class Management | Activity Activation | Engagement | Preview), which shows engagement statuses across all students in the class simultaneously.

Status What It Means
Engaged The student has been actively logging in and interacting with content within the expected timeframe.
Not Engaged The student has not logged in or interacted with content within the expected engagement window. Follow-up from a trainer is recommended.
Expired The student's enrolment period or class end date has passed without completing the required training.

Tip: Use the class-level Engagement tab regularly to identify students showing Not Engaged status before they fall too far behind. Early intervention is far more effective than trying to recover a student who has disengaged entirely.
