Class Engagement Reports

The Class Engagement report gives trainers and administrators a detailed view of how students within a specific class are engaging with their training. It breaks down enrolment activity, time spent on content, and unit-level progress to help you identify students who are on track, students who need follow-up, and which content areas are getting the most attention.

What's Covered in This Article

This article explains how to use the Class Engagement report to monitor and act on class-level engagement data:

  • Class-level engagement statistics: Understanding the summary metrics and engagement trend for a class.
  • Unit and content progress: Drilling into how students are spending time across units and individual content items.
  • Identifying not-engaged students: Finding enrolments where students have gone inactive.
  • Identifying expired enrolments: Spotting students whose access has lapsed.
  • Top performers in class: Using the Overview to see which classes and students are leading on engagement.

Who can do this: Administrators and Trainers with access to the Engagement Dashboard can view Class Engagement reports.

Accessing Class Engagement

Navigate to Engagement in the left sidebar, then select the Class Engagement tab at the top of the page.

When you open the Class Engagement tab, Nimbu displays a list of all classes in the Class Engagement section at the bottom of the Overview tab. Use the Search by course or class name field to locate the class you want to review, then click the class to open its detailed engagement report.

You can also navigate directly to a class from the Top Engagement panel on the Overview tab, which lists your highest-engagement classes at a glance.

A time period filter is available in the top-right corner of the page. The default view shows data for the Last 30 days. Changing this filter updates all metrics, charts, and tables on the page.

Once inside a class report, the breadcrumb at the top of the page shows the course code and class name (for example, SIT50422SIT50422-2026 - Diploma of Hospitality Management), along with the assigned trainer(s) and current class status (e.g. Active).

Class-Level Engagement Statistics

Four summary cards at the top of the class report give you an immediate read on the state of enrolments in the class:

Metric What It Shows
Total Enrolments The total number of students enrolled in the class. The percentage change vs. the previous period is shown below the figure.
Engaged Enrolments Students who have been actively interacting with content within the selected period. Click View Details to see a filtered list of these students.
Expired Enrolments Students whose enrolment access has expired.
Enrolments Not Engaged Students who have not interacted with content during the selected period. Click View Details to see a filtered list.

Engagement Progress Chart

Below the summary cards, the Engagement Progress chart plots engagement activity over the selected time period, with engagement by student on the vertical axis and date on the horizontal axis. Use this chart to spot patterns in the class, for example, a burst of activity around an assessment due date, or a consistent drop-off mid-course that may indicate a structural issue with the content or pacing.

Content Progress Panel

To the right of the chart, the Content Progress panel shows how the class is spending its time across three content categories, each with a sparkline trend graph and a comparison to the previous period:

  • Learning Content: Total time students have spent on learning resource materials (PDFs, videos, articles, etc.).
  • Assessments: Total time students have spent on assessment activities.
  • Observations: Total time students have spent on observation activities.

This breakdown helps you identify whether students are spending the expected amount of time on different content types, for instance, if assessment time is very high relative to learning content, students may not be engaging with the learning materials before attempting assessments.

Unit and Content Progress

Below the class-level charts, the Unit Engagement section allows you to drill into specific units and see exactly how students are spending their time on individual content items.

Selecting a Unit

A list of units assigned to the class appears on the left side of the Unit Engagement section. Each unit shows the unit name and total time spent across all students. Click a unit to load its content breakdown on the right.

Content Breakdown

Once a unit is selected, the right panel displays every content item within that unit. For each item, Nimbu shows:

  • Content name and content type (e.g. Observation, Assessment): indicated by the content type icon and label.
  • Total Spent Time: The combined time all students in the class have spent on this content item.
  • Time Per Student: The average time each student has spent on this item.

Each content row can be expanded using the chevron icon on the left for additional detail.

Use this view to identify content that students are spending significantly more or less time on than expected. A very low time-per-student figure on a key assessment, for example, may indicate students are rushing through it or that it was auto-submitted.

Identifying Not-Engaged Students

The Enrolments Not Engaged card on the class summary shows the number of students who have not interacted with content during the selected time period. To see exactly who these students are:

  1. Click View Details next to the Enrolments Not Engaged figure.
  2. Nimbu will display a filtered list of the enrolments in this state.
  3. Use this list to identify students who need follow-up — for example, a direct message, a phone call, or an escalation to a coordinator.

Tip: Adjusting the time period filter can help you calibrate this list. A student not engaged in the last 7 days may simply be between tasks, whereas a student not engaged in the last 30 days likely needs proactive outreach.

Identifying Expired Enrolments

The Expired Enrolments card shows students whose enrolment access has lapsed - typically because the class end date has passed without the student completing their training. Unlike Not Engaged students who may still have time to catch up, expired enrolments require a separate action to resolve (such as re-enrolment or an extension).

Review the Expired Enrolments count regularly, particularly as classes approach their end date, to ensure students are not falling out of their training without a resolution plan in place.

For actions related to expired enrolments, such as extending access or re-enrolment, navigate to Classes in the left sidebar and manage the enrolment directly from Class Management.

Top Performers in Class

The Engagement Dashboard's Overview tab includes a Top Engagement panel that ranks all classes by the number of engaged students, displayed as both a ratio and a percentage (for example, 3/4 at 75%). This gives you a quick comparison across your active classes to see which ones are tracking well.

To identify the highest-performing students within a specific class, use the Student Engagement tab. Select the class in the Filter by class dropdown, then review the Content Viewed and Completed Content figures for each student to see who is completing the most content and spending the most time learning.

For a granular content-by-content view of a student's activity, refer to the Student Engagement table, which lists every content item the student has interacted with, including completion status and last viewed date.
