Student Engagement Reports

The Student Engagement report gives trainers and administrators a detailed view of how an individual student is interacting with their training. It tracks time on task, content viewed and completed, and activity trends over time, across all classes or filtered to a specific class, so you can build a clear picture of each student's engagement and identify anyone who may need support.

What's Covered in This Article

This article explains how to use the Student Engagement report to monitor and interpret individual student activity:

Who can do this: Administrators and Trainers with access to the Engagement Dashboard can view Student Engagement reports.

Accessing Student Engagement

Navigate to Engagement in the left sidebar, then select the Student Engagement tab at the top of the page.

Selecting a Student

When you open the Student Engagement tab, a student selector appears at the top of the page. Click the dropdown to search for and select the student you want to review.

Once a student is selected, their name and email address are displayed in the selector. Two filters are available to refine the data shown:

  • Student selector: Switch between students using the dropdown.
  • Filter by class: Defaults to All Classes, showing combined engagement data across every class the student is enrolled in. Select a specific class to narrow the view to that class only.

A time period filter is also available in the top-right corner of the page. The default view shows data for the Last 30 days. Changing this filter updates all metrics, charts, and tables on the page.

Individual Student Engagement Tracking

Four summary cards at the top of the student report give you an at-a-glance read of the student's activity within the selected period and class filter:

Metric What It Shows
Total Time The total time the student has spent engaging with content.
Content Viewed The number of content items the student has opened and viewed.
Completed Content The number of content items the student has completed.
Time Per Content The average time the student has spent per content item.

Each metric also displays a percentage change compared to the previous equivalent period (for example, if you are viewing the last 30 days, the comparison is against the 30 days prior to that).

Engagement Progress Chart

Below the summary cards, the Engagement Progress chart plots the student's engagement activity over the selected time period, with engagement by student on the vertical axis and date on the horizontal axis. Use this chart to identify patterns in the student's behaviour — for example, a student who was highly active early in the course but has since dropped off, or one who only engages in bursts around due dates.

Content-Level Engagement

The Content Progress panel and Student Engagement table together provide a granular breakdown of exactly what the student has been doing.

Content Progress Panel

To the right of the Engagement Progress chart, the Content Progress panel breaks down the student's total time by content category, each with a sparkline trend graph and a comparison to the previous period:

  • Learning Content: Time spent on learning resource materials (PDFs, videos, articles, etc.).
  • Assessments: Time spent on assessment activities.
  • Observations: Time spent on observation activities.

This breakdown helps you understand where the student is investing their time. A student who has spent significant time on assessments but very little on learning content may not be engaging with the material before attempting assessed tasks.

Student Engagement Table

Below the charts, the Student Engagement table lists every content item the student has interacted with. You can filter the list by content type using the All Content dropdown and search by content name using the search field.

Column What It Shows
Content Name The name of the content item, displayed as a clickable link.
Unit Name The unit the content belongs to, with a course icon indicating the delivery mode.
Type The content type (e.g. PDF, Assessment, Observation).
Total Time The total time the student has spent on this content item.
Completed Displays a tick with the result status  (S) for Satisfactory or (C) for Completed - when the item has been finished. Items not yet completed show no indicator.
Last Viewed

The date and time the student last accessed this item.

Items never opened show a dash (—).

The table is paginated. The total number of content items is shown at the bottom left of the table. Use the page controls to navigate through the full list.

Tip: Sort the table by Last Viewed to quickly identify content the student has not accessed recently, or filter by a specific content type (e.g. Assessment) to focus on their progress through assessed tasks only.

Per-Class Engagement Metrics

If a student is enrolled in multiple classes, the default view combines engagement data across all of them. To view engagement for a single class:

  1. Use the Filter by class dropdown at the top of the page.
  2. Select the class you want to review.
  3. All summary cards, charts, and the Student Engagement table will update to reflect activity within that class only.

This is particularly useful when a student is completing training across multiple courses simultaneously and you want to assess their engagement with a specific programme rather than their overall activity level.

Engagement History

The time period filter in the top-right corner of the page allows you to review the student's engagement over different windows of time. Changing the period updates all metrics, the Engagement Progress chart, and the Student Engagement table.

Use different time periods to build a fuller picture of the student's activity patterns:

  • A short period (e.g. last 7 days) shows very recent activity and is useful for checking in on a student who may have gone quiet.
  • A longer period (e.g. last 30 days) gives a more stable view of overall engagement trends and is the default view.
  • Comparing different periods using the percentage change indicators on the summary cards can reveal whether a student's engagement is increasing, holding steady, or declining over time.
