Resubmit Requests

When a student's submitted work doesn't meet the required standard, trainers can send a resubmission request rather than finalising a Not Satisfactory result. Resubmission gives the student an opportunity to improve their work, either by redoing the entire task or by addressing only the specific questions that need improvement. Trainers can configure when the resubmission becomes available, attach feedback, and set a deadline for the new submission.

What's Covered in This Article

This article explains how to request a resubmission for an assessment or observation, and how students experience that process.

Who can do this: Trainers with marking permissions can request resubmissions for assessments and observations.

Asking a Student to Resubmit

Resubmission requests are initiated from the Marking tab while viewing a student's submitted work. Depending on how much of the assessment you have reviewed, different options may be available.

For Assessments

  1. Navigate to Marking and open the student's assessment submission.
  2. Mark all short answer and upload questions on the question screens. Self-marking questions (Multiple Choice, True/False, Selection) are automatically marked by the system.
  3. Navigate to the Summary screen.
  4. Select Request Resubmission from the available options.
  5. Configure the resubmission settings (see sections below) and send the request.

Note: If you want to request resubmission before marking all questions, for example, if the overall quality clearly does not meet requirements, you can select Request Resubmission without completing all individual question marking first. In this case, the resubmission type will be limited to New Attempt only.

For Observations

Resubmission applies only to Student Observations which observations that include questions the student is required to complete. Trainer Observations (containing only trainer-completed questions) do not support resubmission.

  1. Navigate to Marking and open the student's observation, either by student or by class.
  2. Review the student's answers and complete any Trainer Questions (such as checklist items) if applicable.
  3. Navigate to the Summary screen.
  4. Select Request Resubmission from the available options.
  5. Configure the resubmission settings and send the request.

Note: Request Revisions is also available from the Marking tab via the kebab menu (⋮). Revisions allow students to edit and resubmit their existing work without creating a new attempt — useful for small corrections. See Request Revisions for more information on when to use each option.

Resubmission Modes

When requesting a resubmission, trainers choose what the student needs to redo.

New Attempt

The student must complete the entire task again from scratch. This is appropriate when the overall quality of the submission does not meet the required standard, or when there are too many unsatisfactory responses to address individually.

  • For assessments: all previous feedback is cleared and the student restarts the full assessment.
  • For observations: the student must redo all student questions. Trainer-completed questions are not affected to any answers your trainer entered previously remain unchanged.

Selected Questions

The student resubmits only the specific questions selected by the trainer. This is useful when the student has performed well on most of the task but needs to improve on particular areas.

  • Only questions marked as Not Satisfactory (NS) can be selected for resubmission.
  • For assessments: previous feedback for the selected questions is cleared. Previous feedback on other questions is retained.
  • For observations: only student questions can be selected. Trainer questions are excluded and are not sent to the student.
  • Previous feedback on selected questions is kept and displayed to the student to guide their resubmission.

Click Show Questions to review the list of questions that will be included before sending the request.

Note: If the assessment has attempt limits and the student is already on their last attempt, requesting resubmission for selected questions will grant the student one additional attempt beyond the limit.

Adding a Message and Attachments

When configuring the resubmission request, trainers can provide optional feedback to help the student understand what needs to improve.

  • Feedback (comment): Enter a written message in the Feedback field. This is displayed to the student when they open the resubmission request. Use this to summarise areas for improvement and guide the student's next attempt.
  • File attachment: Upload a file to accompany your feedback — for example, an annotated rubric, a reference document, or additional instructions.

Both fields are optional, but providing clear, constructive feedback significantly improves the quality of the student's resubmission and reduces the likelihood of a further Not Satisfactory result.

Tip: For a New Attempt resubmission, all previous question-level feedback is cleared. Any guidance you want the student to carry into the new attempt should be included in the overall feedback field.

Resubmission Timing

Trainers choose when the resubmission becomes available to the student. Three options are available:

Immediately

The activity unlocks for the student as soon as the resubmission request is sent. The student can access and begin working on it straight away.

Lock Until (Scheduled Date)

The activity is locked and unavailable to the student until a specific date and time you set. At the scheduled time, the system automatically unlocks the activity for the student — no further action required from the trainer.

Use this option when you want to give the student time to review materials or attend a session before reattempting, or when you want to schedule the resubmission to align with a class date.

Require Trainer to Manually Activate

The activity remains locked until the trainer manually reactivates it via Class Management – Activity Activation. This option is only available for assessments or observations that have the Trainer Activation Required setting enabled.

Use this when you want full control over when the student can access the resubmission for example, to activate it during a supervised session.

Due Date (Optional)

Across all three timing options, you can also set an optional due date for the resubmission. If set, the student will see a countdown timer and their work will be automatically submitted when the deadline is reached.

If the assessment already has Assessment Attempt Limit settings with due times configured, the due date field will pre-populate with the corresponding attempt's due time. You can override this with a different value if needed.

Note: The due date must be set after the current time, or after the lock time if Lock Until is selected.

How Students See Resubmit Requests

When a resubmission request is sent, the student is notified immediately.

Email notification: The student receives an email containing:

  • The name of the assessment or observation
  • Your feedback (if provided)
  • A direct link to access the activity
  • The resubmission timing details (when it becomes available and the due date, if applicable)

Accessing the resubmission: When the student opens the activity, a modal displays the resubmission details including your feedback, the due date (if set), and what they need to complete. The student clicks through this modal to begin their resubmission.

What students see during resubmission:

  • For a New Attempt: The student sees a fresh, blank version of the assessment or observation and must complete it in full.
  • For Selected Questions: The student sees only the questions selected for resubmission, along with any feedback you provided for those questions. They do not need to redo questions that were already satisfactory.

Automatic submission: If a due date is set and the student has not submitted by the deadline, their work is automatically submitted by the system. The student sees a pop-up notification indicating their work has been turned in.

Once the student submits, their work returns to your Marking queue with a status of TBM (To Be Marked), ready for you to review and finalise.
