Requesting Resubmission
When a student's submitted work does not meet the required standard, Requesting Resubmission allows Trainers to return the activity and give the student a structured opportunity to improve. Rather than simply recording a Not Satisfactory result, resubmission creates a guided feedback loop with options to control exactly what the student resubmits, when they can access it, and what guidance they receive.
Resubmission is available for both assessments and observations, and can target the entire activity or only the specific questions that need improvement.
What's Covered in This Article
This article explains when and how to request a resubmission from a student.
- When to Request Resubmission: The conditions that indicate resubmission is the appropriate action.
- Resubmission Modes: Controlling when the student can access and begin their resubmission.
- Selecting Specific Questions: How to target only the questions that require resubmission rather than the full activity.
- Adding a Message and Attachments: How to provide guidance and supporting materials for the student's resubmission effort.
When to Request Resubmission
Resubmission is appropriate when a student's work demonstrates effort but falls short of the required standard, and you want to give them a structured opportunity to address specific shortcomings before a final result is recorded.
Who Can Use This?
Trainers with the Mark Students permission.
Common scenarios for requesting resubmission:
- One or more questions are marked Not Satisfactory and you want the student to readdress them before a final outcome is set.
- The student submitted incomplete or insufficient evidence for an online submission question.
- The overall submission does not meet the required standard and a full new attempt is warranted.
Resubmission vs. Request Revisions: Resubmission creates a new attempt (either for the full activity or selected questions). Request Revisions returns the student's existing submission for editing without creating a new attempt. Use resubmission when the student needs to start fresh on a question; use Request Revisions when you want the student to refine what they have already submitted.
Where to initiate:
Resubmission is initiated from the marking screen while reviewing a student's submission, or from the Summary screen once marking is complete. It is available for both assessments and observations.
Resubmission Modes
When requesting a resubmission, you must choose when the student will be able to access and begin their resubmission. Nimbu offers three modes.
Immediately
The student can access and begin their resubmission as soon as the request is sent.
- Use this when the student needs to act quickly, or when no coordination with the Trainer is required before the student begins.
- The student receives an email and in-app notification with the resubmission details and can open the activity straight away.
Lock Until Date
The activity is locked and inaccessible to the student until a specified date and time, at which point it becomes available automatically.
- Use this when you want to schedule the resubmission for a future session, or when you need time to prepare before the student begins.
- Set the lock date and time using the date picker. The activity will unlock automatically at the specified time without any further Trainer action.
- The due time, if set, begins from the moment the activity unlocks.
Require Trainer to Manually Activate
The activity remains locked until the Trainer manually activates it for the student from Class Management > Activity Activation.
- Use this when resubmission timing depends on circumstances that cannot be predetermined — for example, when a practical resubmission requires Trainer presence or when scheduling is yet to be confirmed.
- This option is only available for activities that have Trainer Activation Required enabled in their content settings.
- Until the Trainer activates the activity, the student cannot access it regardless of how much time has passed.

Selecting Questions for Resubmission
Nimbu gives you the flexibility to return the entire activity or only the questions that require improvement.
Resubmit New Attempt
The student must redo the entire activity from scratch.
- All previous question responses are cleared (for assessments) or all Student Questions are reset (for observations).
- Previous feedback provided on individual questions is cleared.
- Trainer Questions in observations are not affected to any responses already recorded by the Trainer remain unchanged.
- Use this when the submission as a whole does not meet the required standard, or when multiple questions across the activity need to be redone.
Resubmit Selected Questions
The student resubmits only the specific questions you select which they do not need to redo questions they have already answered satisfactorily.
- For assessments: Mark the Student to Resubmit checkbox on individual NS questions while working through the question screens, or tick the Resubmit checkbox on the Summary screen. Only NS questions can be selected for resubmission.
- For observations: Mark the Student to Resubmit checkbox on individual Student Questions while marking, or adjust the selection on the Summary screen. Only Student Questions can be selected - Trainer Questions cannot be returned to the student.
- Previous feedback for the selected questions is cleared. Feedback on questions not selected for resubmission is retained and remains visible to the student.

Adding a Resubmission Message and Attachments
When sending a resubmission request, you can provide context and guidance to help the student understand what is expected of them.
Due Time
Set an optional deadline for the resubmission.
- Use the date and time picker to specify when the resubmission must be submitted by.
- If a due time is set, the student will see a countdown timer on the activity and will be automatically submitted when the time expires.
- For assessments with Assessment Attempt Limit & Due Time settings, the default due time is pre-filled from the corresponding attempt's settings and can be edited.
- The due time must be set after the current time or after the lock date (if applicable).
Feedback Message
Add a written message to accompany the resubmission request.
- Use this field to clearly explain why the work is being returned, what the student needs to address, and any specific guidance for their next attempt.
- The feedback message is visible to the student in their resubmission notification and on the activity screen when they open it.
- While optional, providing a clear and constructive message significantly improves the quality of the student's resubmission and reduces the likelihood of a repeated Not Satisfactory outcome.
File Attachments
Attach a supporting file alongside your feedback message.
- Upload annotated work samples, marking guides, or reference materials to give the student concrete guidance for their resubmission.
- The attached file is accessible to the student from the resubmission notification and the activity screen.
