Content Activation for Students

Some assessments and observations in your course aren't available to start straight away - your trainer needs to activate them for you first. This is intentional: it ensures you receive the necessary briefing or instruction before attempting a task, and that high-stakes activities only open when your trainer is ready to supervise them.

When your trainer activates a piece of content, you'll receive a notification letting you know it's ready, along with any timing details you need to be aware of.

What's Covered in This Article

This article explains what content activation means for you as a student and what to expect when accessing activated activities.

What Activation Means

If an assessment or observation shows as locked in your unit, it may be waiting for your trainer to activate it. This is a deliberate setting that your trainer or RTO has configured - it's not an error on your end.

Once your trainer activates the content, one of two things will happen depending on how they've configured it:

  • The activity opens immediately and you can begin straight away.
  • The activity is scheduled to open at a future date and time, and will unlock automatically when that time is reached.

Note: You won't be able to access or submit a locked activity until your trainer activates it. If you believe content should be available and it's still locked, contact your trainer to confirm.

Getting Notified

When your trainer activates an assessment or observation for you, Nimbu sends you an email notification containing:

  • The name of the activity
  • The unit it belongs to
  • A direct link to access it
  • The open time and due date (if your trainer has set these)

You can also see pending and upcoming activities in the Keep Learning section of your dashboard, and check the status of each activity directly within your unit.

Immediate vs. Scheduled Access

Depending on how your trainer has set up the activation, you may encounter one of the following scenarios:

Immediate Access: The activity is open as soon as your trainer activates it. You can click in and begin working on it straight away.

Scheduled Access (Open Time): Your trainer has set a specific date and time for the activity to open. The activity will appear in your unit with a timer or status indicator showing when it becomes available. It will unlock automatically at the scheduled time, you don't need to do anything.

You can view the scheduled open time by clicking the activity in your unit before it opens. A pop-up will display the relevant timing details.

Read-Only Periods

In some cases, your trainer may set a read-only period before the activity officially opens. During this time, you can open and read through the assessment or observation - but you cannot fill in answers or submit anything yet.

This is often used so students can review questions in advance of a timed session or workshop.

During a read-only period:

  • You can read the activity content in full.
  • Input fields and the submit button are not available.
  • You can see how long until the open time begins.

Once the read-only period ends, the activity automatically transitions to open and you can begin submitting your work.

Due Dates and Auto-Submission

If your trainer has set a due date, your unit view will display a countdown timer so you can track how much time you have remaining.

Important: When the due time is reached, your work is automatically submitted by the system - even if you haven't finished. Unfinished questions will be submitted as-is and sent to your trainer for review.

You can view all timing details for an activity - including the open time, due date, and any attempt information - by clicking the activity before you start. A pop-up will display this information and remain visible until you click Start Now.

Tip: If you have concerns about a deadline or need more time, speak to your trainer before the due date passes. Trainers can adjust due dates for individual students where needed.
