Pre-Course Materials & Pre-Training Review

Before you can access your class and begin your formal training, your RTO may require you to complete a set of pre-course requirements. These requirements exist to ensure every student is prepared, informed, and ready to start training on the same foundation. This article explains what those requirements are, how to complete them, and what happens once you are done.

What's Covered in This Article

This article covers the two types of pre-course requirements you may encounter in Nimbu, how to work through each of them, and how completing them unlocks your access to class content.

Pre-Course Materials

Pre-Course Materials are documents and resources your RTO provides before training begins. These may include items such as:

  • Student Handbook
  • Course Guide
  • Privacy Policy
  • Complaints and Appeals Policy
  • Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Information
  • Workplace Health and Safety Guidelines
  • Code of Conduct

These materials are provided to make sure you understand your rights, responsibilities, and what to expect throughout your course before you begin.

Accessing Pre-Course Materials

When you are enrolled in a course that includes Pre-Course Materials, you will be prompted to review them before accessing your class. You can access them from your course or class view: a prompt or button will indicate that pre-course requirements are outstanding.

Reviewing the Documents

Each document will be listed individually. Click on a document to open and read it. Some documents are provided for your information only, while others require you to actively accept them before you can proceed.

Accepting Required Documents

Some documents carry an acceptance requirement - your RTO needs confirmation that you have received and read the material before your training begins. These documents are identified by an acceptance checkbox or declaration.

How to Accept a Document

  1. Open the document and read through its contents.
  2. Once you have reviewed it, locate the acceptance checkbox or declaration beneath the document.
  3. Tick the checkbox to confirm that you have read and understood the material.
  4. Repeat this process for each document that requires acceptance.

Important: You must accept all required documents to complete the Pre-Course Material stage. Documents that do not have an acceptance requirement do not need any action beyond reading - they are provided for your reference.

Once all required documents have been accepted, the Pre-Course Material step will be marked as complete and you can move on to the next requirement (if any).

Pre-Training Review

The Pre-Training Review (PTR) is a short assessment your RTO uses to check your foundational understanding of the subject matter before training begins. Completing it confirms that you have the baseline knowledge needed to participate in the course.

What to Expect

The Pre-Training Review consists of questions your RTO has prepared. Question types may include:

  • Multiple Choice: Select one correct answer from a list of options.
  • True/False: Indicate whether a statement is correct or incorrect.
  • Selection: Select one or more correct answers from a list.
  • Short Answer: Provide a written response to an open-ended question.
  • File Upload: Upload a document or file as evidence.

Note: The number of questions, question types, and pass requirements are set by your RTO and will vary between courses.

Completing the Pre-Training Review

  1. From your course or class view, locate the Pre-Training Review prompt.
  2. Click to open the review and read any instructions provided by your RTO.
  3. Work through each question and submit your answers when ready.
  4. For auto-marked questions (Multiple Choice, True/False, Selection), you will receive your result immediately after submission.
  5. For questions requiring manual marking (Short Answer, File Upload), your trainer will review your responses and provide a result.

Attempt Limits

Your RTO may set a limit on how many times you can attempt the Pre-Training Review. If attempts are limited, the number of remaining attempts will be displayed on the review screen. If you are unsatisfied with your result and attempts remain, you may be able to re-attempt the review.

If you have used all your available attempts and have not met the requirements, contact your trainer or administrator for guidance.

Note: If your Pre-Training Review includes questions that require manual marking by a trainer, you may need to wait for your trainer to review and submit your result before you can proceed. You will receive a notification once your result is available.

Progressing to Course Content

Once you have completed all required pre-course steps, your class access is granted automatically and you can begin your training.

What Unlocks

  • Your enrolled units become accessible.
  • You can view and begin activities, assessments, and learning resources within your units.
  • Your enrolment status updates to reflect that you are now active in the class.

If You Have Both Requirements

If your course includes both Pre-Course Materials and a Pre-Training Review, you must complete both before access is granted. The order in which you complete them does not matter — both must be finished before your class unlocks.
