Viewing Your Courses and Units

Once you are enrolled in a class, Nimbu organises your training into courses and units which is giving you a clear, structured view of everything you need to complete. This article explains how to navigate your enrolled courses, understand the status of each unit, and recognise the different types of content and requirements you may encounter along the way.

What's Covered in This Article

This article walks you through the course and unit view as a student, covering the key elements you will encounter as you progress through your training.

Accessing Your Enrolled Courses

To navigate to your course content:

  1. From your Student Dashboard, locate the class card for the course you want to study.
  2. Click the class card to open it. You will see a list of all units included in your class.
  3. Click on a unit to expand it and view its content, include learning resources (articles, PDFs, videos) and activities (assessments and observations).
  4. Click the View button next to any content item to open it and begin working.

Note: If you are enrolled in multiple classes, all of them appear on your dashboard. Use the course name and class name on each card to navigate to the correct one.

Understanding Unit Statuses

Each unit in your course displays a status label that reflects your current progress. These statuses update automatically as you work through your training.

Status What It Means
IA: Inactive You have not yet started this unit. It may be waiting for your trainer to activate it, or it may be locked by a prerequisite.
IP: In Progress You have started this unit and have work still to complete.
AR: Awaiting Result You have completed all required content in this unit. Your trainer is reviewing your result.
C: Competent You have successfully completed this unit and achieved a competent outcome.
NC: Not Competent You did not meet the required standard for this unit. Your trainer may ask you to resubmit work.

Content Item Statuses

Within each unit, individual content items also display a status:

Status What It Means
Locked This item is not yet available. A prerequisite must be completed first, or your trainer has not yet activated it.
Ready This item is available and ready for you to begin.
In Progress You have started but not yet completed or submitted this item.
Completed You have finished this item.

Tip: If a unit shows AR status, your work is complete and with your trainer for review. No further action is needed unless your trainer contacts you.

Cluster Units

Some units in your course may be Cluster Units. A cluster is a special unit type that groups two or more accredited units together and delivers them as a single, integrated learning experience.

Rather than completing the same type of assessment multiple times for each individual unit, you complete one combined set of tasks that counts as evidence across all the units in the cluster.

What this means for you as a student:

  • A cluster unit will appear in your unit list like any other unit, with its own status indicator.
  • The content and activities inside the cluster cover the learning outcomes of all the units it contains.
  • When your trainer marks your work as Competent, the result applies to each of the individual units grouped within the cluster.
  • The individual national codes for each unit within the cluster are recorded in the background for your qualification and compliance reporting — you do not need to do anything extra.

Note: Cluster units are set up by your RTO's content team. You do not need to configure anything, simply work through the content and activities as you would in any other unit.

Pre-Course Requirements

Before you can access the units in your course, your RTO may require you to complete one or both of the following pre-course requirements. These will appear at the top of your course view and must be finished before your units become available.

Pre-Course Material (PCM)

Pre-Course Materials are documents your RTO requires you to read before starting your training. These typically include:

  • Student Handbook
  • Course Guide
  • Privacy Policy
  • Complaints and Appeals Policy
  • Workplace Health and Safety information

To complete Pre-Course Material:

  1. Open the Pre-Course Material item at the top of your course view.
  2. Review each document provided.
  3. For documents that require acknowledgement, tick the checkbox to confirm you have read and understood the content.
  4. Once all required acknowledgements are completed, the requirement will be marked as done and your units will become accessible.

Pre-Training Review (PTR)

A Pre-Training Review is a short assessment your RTO uses to confirm your foundational knowledge before training begins. It is not graded in the same way as a formal assessment, it is designed to help your trainer understand your starting point.

To complete a Pre-Training Review:

  1. Open the Pre-Training Review item at the top of your course view.
  2. Answer all questions and submit.
  3. Self-marking questions (multiple choice, true/false, selection) are marked automatically. You will see your result immediately.
  4. Once the PTR is submitted, your course units will become accessible.

Important: Both Pre-Course Material and Pre-Training Review must be completed before you can access any units in the course. If you see your units listed but greyed out or locked, check whether you have an outstanding pre-course requirement at the top of your course view.

Course Subscription Status

If your RTO offers courses with subscription-based access, your enrolment may have an active access period attached to it. This means you can access your course content for a defined period of time: weekly, monthly, or yearly, depend on the subscription your RTO has configured.

What to look out for:

  • Your course card or enrolment details may display an access expiry date or a subscription renewal date.
  • If your subscription expires, your access to the course and its units may be paused until the subscription is renewed.
  • If you registered for a course through your RTO's online portal and paid via subscription, your access period is tied to your ongoing payments.

Note: Not all courses use subscription pricing. Many courses are delivered through a standard class enrolment with no time-limited access. If you are unsure whether your course has a subscription component, contact your RTO administrator.
