Setting: Pre-Course Requirements

Pre-Course Requirements serve as the essential starting line for your curriculum. By configuring these elements, you ensure that students have reviewed mandatory documentation and completed necessary readiness assessments before they can progress into the core units of a course.

This structured entry point not only supports compliance for RTOs but also guarantees a baseline of knowledge across your entire cohort, allowing Trainers to focus on advanced delivery rather than administrative catch-up.

What's Covered in This Article

This article detailing how to set up and manage student readiness through pre-training logic.

Pre-Training Review (PTR)

The Pre-Training Review is a specialised assessment designed to evaluate whether a student has the foundational knowledge required before beginning a course.

  • When to use: Enable this when a qualification has specific entry requirements or when you need to confirm a student's readiness before they access the core curriculum. The PTR is fully configurable, allowing you to tailor questions to your program's requirements.
  • Impact: It acts as a mandatory gatekeeper; if enabled, students must complete this review to be considered officially started in the program.

Pre-Course Materials (PCM)

Pre-Course Materials are resources that students are required to review and acknowledge before accessing training content.

  • When to use: Ideal for distributing Student Handbooks, Course Guides, or safety policies that require administrative sign-off.
  • Content Type: Typically includes PDFs, video orientations, or policy documents.

Enabling and Linking Content

Both requirements are managed from within the course settings under the Units & Content tab.

  1. Locate the Pre-Training Section: Scroll to the bottom of the course configuration page.
  2. Enable Toggles: Use the red/white toggle switches to activate either the Pre Course Material or the Pre Training Review (or both)
  3. Link Content: Once enabled, a dropdown menu will appear. Select the specific document or activity you want to assign from your library.
  4. Requirement status: If the toggle is on, the field is marked with a red asterisk (*), indicating that a selection is mandatory for students.

How Students Complete Requirements

When these settings are active, the student's learning journey follows a strictly gated sequence:

  • Initial Access: Upon logging in, the student will see the Student Pre-Training Review and Student Pre-Course Material at the tab Document on the top of their unit list.
  • Gated Content: All other unit content (Accredited Units, Assessments, etc.) will remain locked or invisible until the pre-training items are addressed.
  • The "Unlocking" Event: Once the student completes the PTR or acknowledges the PCM, the system automatically triggers the activation of the first Unit in the course sequence.

  • Pre-Training Content (Content Library)
  • Pre-Course Materials (Content Library)
  • Pre-Course Materials & Pre-Training Review (Student Guide)
