Requesting Revision
When a student's submission is close to meeting the required standard but needs targeted corrections, the Request Revisions feature allows trainers to send specific questions back to the student for editing without creating a new attempt. The student revises their existing answers and resubmits the same attempt, keeping the overall submission history intact.
This is distinct from a resubmission request, which requires the student to start a new attempt or redo selected questions fresh. Choosing the right approach depends on how much of the student's work needs to change.
What's Covered in This Article
This article explains how to use the Request Revisions feature and what happens to the student's work during the process.
- Revision vs. Resubmission: When to use each and the key differences.
- Asking a Student to Revise Specific Questions: How to initiate a revision request from the Marking tab.
- What Happens to Previous Answers and Feedback: How the student's existing work is affected.
- Setting a New Due Date for Revision: Applying an optional deadline for the revised submission.
Who can do this: Trainers with marking permissions can request revisions for assessments and observations.
Revision vs. Resubmission
Both features return work to a student for further attention, but they operate differently and suit different situations.
|
|
Request Revisions | Request Resubmission |
|---|---|---|
| Creates a new attempt | No: the student edits their existing submission | Yes: the student starts fresh or redoes selected questions |
| Student's existing answers | Preserved: the student edits in place | Cleared for the questions being resubmitted |
| Scope | Selected questions from the current submission only | Entire assessment/observation or selected NS questions |
| Existing feedback on revised questions | Removed when the request is sent | Retained for Selected Questions resubmission; cleared for New Attempt |
| Attempt count | Unaffected | Consumes an attempt (or grants an additional one if the limit is reached) |
| Best for | Minor corrections: student is close to meeting the standard | Significant gaps: student needs to demonstrate competency again |
Tip: Use Request Resubmission when the overall quality of the submission does not meet the required standard.
Asking a Student to Revise Specific Questions
Revision requests are initiated from the Marking tab while viewing a student's current submission. The option is available for both assessments and observations that include student questions.
- Navigate to Marking and open the student's submission either from the Assessment or Practical/Observation for Student marking view.
- Click the kebab menu (⋮) in the header of the marking screen.
- Select Request Revisions from the dropdown. This option is available from both the individual question screens and the Summary screen.
- The Request Revisions modal opens.

Reviewing the Questions for Revisions
The modal displays a Questions for Revisions section showing the questions that will be returned to the student, along with a count of how many have been marked so far (for example, "Marked: 1 of 4").
The question list operates under specific rules:
- Scope is limited to the current submission. Only questions from the student's current attempt are included. Questions from previous attempts are excluded.
- Trainer questions are excluded. Questions that the trainer completes (such as observation checklists) are not shown and cannot be sent to the student for revision.

What Happens to Previous Answers and Feedback
Understanding what is preserved and what is removed helps you decide whether revision or resubmission is the right approach.
What is preserved:
- The student's existing answers to all questions — including those not selected for revision. The student picks up exactly where they left off.
- The overall submission record and attempt count remain unchanged. No new attempt is created.
- Feedback and results on questions that are not selected for revision remain intact.
What is removed:
- All feedback and results previously entered on any question in the submission are cleared when the request is sent, including questions not being revised. This is by design: because the entire submission is returned, you will need to re-mark all questions after the student resubmits.
Activity status change:
When the revision request is sent, the task's status changes from TBM (To Be Marked) back to IP (In Progress). The task returns to TBM once the student resubmits, at which point it reappears in your marking queue for review.
Setting a New Due Date for Revision
The Request Revisions modal includes a Due Time field and an optional reason field before you send the request.
Due Time
The Due Time control uses two radio button options:
- No Due Time (selected by default): the student can revise and resubmit at any time while the activity remains open. No deadline is applied.
- Set Time: select this option to enter a specific date and time by which the student must submit their revised work. The due date cannot be set in the past. If a due time is set, the student will see a countdown timer on the activity, and their work will be automatically submitted when the deadline is reached.
Reason (Optional)
Enter a brief explanation in the Reason (Optional) field. The placeholder text reads: "Explain why this submission needs revision. This message will be visible to student..." While optional, providing a clear reason helps the student understand what needs to improve and reduces the need for follow-up questions.
Once configured, click Send Request to dispatch the revision request to the student.
How Students Are Notified
When the request is sent, the student receives:
- An email notification with the subject line containing Revisions Request, prompting them to review and revise their work.
- An in-app notification visible from the notification bell icon.
The notification includes the activity name, the due time (if set), and the reason (if provided). The student can click through directly to the activity to begin their revisions.
