A Course in Nimbu is the master template for your training program define the units, content, and delivery logic that every student in that program will follow. Whether you are delivering a full qualification or a short professional development workshop, this guide walks through each step of building and publishing a course template ready for class creation.
What's Covered in This Article
This article provides a step-by-step walkthrough for assembling and publishing a Course template.
- Initial Setup: Creating the course container and defining mandatory identification fields.
- General Information: Adding descriptions and thumbnails to enrich the course listing.
- Delivery Model: Choosing between Trainer-Led and Self-Served delivery.
- Curriculum Mapping: Populating the course with published units.
- Pre-Training Configuration: Setting up optional pre-course materials and readiness assessments.
- Finalisation: Reviewing and publishing the course.
Detailed Guide: From Blueprint to Template
Step 1: Create the Course
- From the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on the Courses option to access the course registry.
- Click the Add button in the top-right corner of the page.
- Select the appropriate Regulatory Status:
- Accredited: Requires a mandatory National Code and National Title to ensure compliance with AVETMISS standards.
- Non-Accredited: Requires only an Internal Code and Name for informal or professional development training.

Step 2: Configure General Information
Once the container is created, provide the necessary context for the course:
- Course Description: Use the text editor to add an introduction or overview of the qualification.

- Course Thumbnail: Upload an image to help identify the course in student and trainer dashboards. Files must not exceed 500 MB.

Step 3: Set the Delivery Model
Before mapping units, confirm how this course will be delivered. In the course settings, locate the Self-Served toggle:
- Trainer-Led (default): Trainers manage student access, manually activating assessments and observations as needed. Classes are created manually and students are enrolled by an administrator or trainer.
- Self-Served: Students progress through the course independently without trainer activation. When a self-served course is published, a class is automatically created and made available for student enrolment.
The Self-Served setting cannot be changed once it has been enabled or once classes exist under the course. Confirm your delivery model before publishing. For a full breakdown of how each model works, see the What is a Course? article.
Step 4: Map Units and Content
This is where you define the curriculum by bringing your pre-built units into the course structure. Navigate to the Units & Content tab within the course settings.
Scenario 1: Adding an Existing Unit
- Navigate to the Units & Content tab within the course settings.
- Click the Add Unit button to select from your registry of published Accredited, Non-Accredited, or Cluster units.
- Once added, use the drag-and-drop handles to arrange units in the sequence students should follow.

Scenario 2: Creating a New Unit
If the required unit does not yet exist, you can create one directly from the Course editor:
- Click Create Unit.
- Select the unit type from the modal: Accredited, Non-Accredited, or Cluster.
- Enter the mandatory identification fields (National Code and National Title for Accredited units).
- Optionally enable the Add Code toggle to assign an internal organisational code, or use the Internal Note field for administrative context.
Once saved, the new unit is automatically mapped to your current course template.
Units must be published before they can be added to a course via Add Unit. Units created through the Create Unit workflow are linked to the course automatically.

Step 5: Configure Pre-Training (Optional)
If your course requires students to review materials or complete a readiness check before beginning:
- In the Units & Content tab, select your Pre Course Material and Pre Training Review from the relevant dropdown lists.
- These can be disabled at any time by toggling them off if they are not required for a specific course template.

Step 6: Save and Publish
- Review the Preview tab to see how the course structure appears to potential students.
- Click Save as Draft to return and continue editing later, or click Publish in the top-right corner when ready.

Once published, the course is locked for structural changes to ensure consistency across all classes generated from it. It is now available for class creation, allowing you to assign trainers and enrol students.
