This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough of the standard process for creating a new assessment.

  • Step 1: Navigate to the Assessment management area within the Content Library.
  • Step 2: Define essential identification fields for accurate record-keeping.
  • Step 3: Structure your assessment by adding various question types.
  • Step 4: Transition your assessment from a Draft state to a Published state

Configuration Guide: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Navigate to the Content Library

Assessments are managed as a core part of your Content registry.

  1. Locate the CONTENT section in the left-hand navigation sidebar.
  2. Click on Assessment/ Practical/ Observation Tasks.
  3. On the main management page, click the Add button at the top-right to initiate a new assessment

Step 2: Define Identification & Settings

Once the editor opens, you will land on the Pre-assessment Information tab. Use this section to establish accurate record-keeping and basic rules:

  • Title: Enter a descriptive name for the content (e.g., BSBTWK502 Knowledge Assessment).
  • Assessment Message: Use the rich-text editor to provide instructions or a summary for students. This might include:
    • Overview of what the assessment covers
    • Advice on how to approach the questions
    • Time recommendations or study tips
  • Supporting Documents: Drag and drop or upload files (up to 500 MB) that students may need to complete the task. Simply drag and drop files into the designated area, or click to browse and upload.
  • Assessment Settings:  Configure how students interact with the assessment:
    • Manual Trainer Activation

Toggle this on to require trainers to manually activate the assessment before students can access it. This allows you to:

      • Control when assessments become available
      • Set read-only periods for preview
      • Configure specific open times and due dates

        Assessment Attempt Limits

Set restrictions on how many times students can attempt the assessment:

      • Define the number of allowed attempts (e.g., 2 attempts)
      • Set due times for each attempt
      • Enable auto-submission when limits are reached

For detailed information on these settings, refer to the Assessment Attempts and Trainer Activation guide.

Step 3: Structure Your Assessment Questions

Switch to the Edit Questions tab to build the actual assessment items.

Adding Questions

  1. From the left-hand menu, select a Question Type:
    • Short Answer: Open text responses for detailed answers
    • True/False: Binary correct/incorrect questions
    • Multiple Choice: Select one correct answer from options
    • Selection: Choose multiple correct answers from options
    • Online Submission: File submissions for documents, images, or portfolios
    • Question Set: Group of related questions organised together
  2. Follow the prompts to enter your question text and configure marking criteria
  3. For auto-marked questions (Multiple Choice, True/False, Selection), define the correct answer(s)
  4. For manually marked questions (Short Answer, Online Submission), provide clear marking guidance

Organising Questions

Once added, you can:

  • Drag and drop questions to reorder them according to your delivery strategy
  • Edit existing questions by clicking on them
  • Delete questions that are no longer needed (only in Draft status)

Step 4: Preview and Publish

Before making the assessment live, use the Preview tab to review the student's perspective of the task.

  • Save as Draft: If the assessment requires further internal review or testing:
    1. Click Save as Draft in the top-right corner
    2. The assessment remains in Draft status and can be freely edited
    3. Draft assessments can be deleted if no longer needed
  • Publish: When the assessment is finalised and ready for use:
    1. Click the red Publish button to make it active
    2. Published assessments become available for mapping to Units
    3. Published assessments can still be edited, but cannot be deleted
