Observation Question Types
Practical observations require a multi-dimensional approach to gathering evidence. Nimbu's Observation Question Library is designed to support real-time evaluation of hands-on skills. By utilising structured checklists and detailed summary fields, you ensure that every student's performance is recorded with the necessary context and supporting documentation required for valid assessment decisions

Precision in Evidence Collection
Key features of observation questions include:
- Behavioural Specificity: Using checklists to track multiple observable behaviours within a single task
- Supporting Data: The ability to attach comments, file uploads, and specific observation dates during marking
- Delivery Flexibility: Defining whether a task is marked for each student individually or as a collective class activity (where applicable)
Configuration Guide: Question Type Breakdown
Checklist Question
The Checklist Question (the file stack icon) is the primary tool for evaluating complex procedures. It allows you to break down a practical skill into a series of Observation Tasks or observable behaviours.
Key characteristics:
- Trainer-marked only: Students do not interact with checklist questions; trainers complete them during observation
- Multiple tasks per checklist: You can add multiple observation tasks within one checklist to ensure all required criteria are covered in a single session
- Detailed records at marking time: For every item in the checklist, trainers can record specific comments, upload supporting files, and note observed dates during the marking process

Short Answer Question
The Short Answer Question (the pen icon) is used to capture written responses, reflections, or assessment summaries.
Key characteristics:
- Can require student input: Toggle whether students must complete this before trainer marking, or whether only the trainer completes it
- Open-ended responses: Allows for qualitative assessment and professional judgement
- Delivery flexibility: Can be applied to individual students or to the class as a whole (when student input is not required)

Online Submission
The Online Submission (the upward arrow icon) allows students to provide their own evidence to support the observation.
Key characteristics:
- Student evidence collection: Students upload files, documents, photos, or videos
- Portfolio building: Supports accumulation of practical evidence over time
- Delivery flexibility: Can be applied to individual students or to the class as a whole (when student input is not required)
Delivery Settings: Class vs. Individual
This setting applies only to Short Answer Questions and Online Submissions when student completion is not required.
When configuring these question types, you can define the "Apply to class" setting:
Apply to Each Student Individually
This is the standard setting for most observations, where the trainer evaluates each student's unique performance separately.
Use when:
- Each student's performance or evidence is unique
- Individual assessment is required for competency determination
- Students are observed at different times or locations
Apply to the Class as a Collective
This setting allows the trainer's answer to apply to all students in the class simultaneously.
Use when:
- Observing a group activity with shared outcomes
- The same conditions or criteria apply to all students present
- Conducting whole-class demonstrations or drills
Important: Checklist Questions do not have this option and are always marked individually per student.
